 Rockwood Additives Ltd., a subsidiary of Rockwood Specialties, Inc. along with its sister companies Rockwood Clay Additives GmbH and Southern Clay Products, Inc. produce and market an extensive range of natural and synthetic additives that are used to perform critical functions by manufacturers of Industrial and Consumer products.  The Rockwood Additives Limited, Widnes site has been the home of inorganic chemical manufacture for over 75 years since Peter Spence & Sons Ltd began producing aluminium sulphate (used in treatment of waste water) at Moorfield Road in 1923. The site was owned from 1960 until recently by Laporte Industries Ltd until it was sold in 2000 along with several other major business of the Laporte group in a deal worth $1.2 billion to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co, a leading US private equity firm.
Major products made on our site in Widnes:
- 1940 - 1960 - catalysts based upon aluminium chemistry used in petroleum refining.
- 1960 - 1990 - molecular sieves used as absorbents and in petrochemical and other industries.
- 1980 onwards - chemical processing of clays into speciality products used in the food, personal care, surface coating and paper industries.
- Today - the two major product groups made at Rockwood Widnes are Fulacolor® and Laponite® have contributed significantly to the success of the site during the past ten years.
