Electrical Design Engineer

A premier manufacturer of innovative electronic personal protective equipment and safety, my client produces products that protect thousands of individuals each day from environmental hazards including smoke, toxic fumes, combustible gases, and flame contaminants and are up there with the very best in the world at what they do.

This is a hands-on role requiring a thorough study and understanding of existing designs, to apply innovative engineering principles towards re-design and optimisation. Additionally, the position works with new product development teams to ensure transfer of lessons learned. Currently looking to recruit an Electrical Design Engineer on a long-term contract basis, the successful candidate can expect to absorb such responsibilities as follows:

Responsibilities of an Electrical Design Engineer:

  • To define and implement electronic design and re-design solutions for high quality life safety products.
  • To support multidisciplinary design teams in the electrical engineering analyses, design, drafting, development, testing and support of electromechanical embedded systems.
  • Circuit design activities including microcontrollers, analog, power distribution, IO, cables/wiring/harnesses, power management, displays, batteries, and other components found in portable, rugged electromechanical products.
  • PCB layout activities include stack up, outline, placement, routing, preparation for fabrication, EMI/EMC, RFI, and intrinsic safety.
  • To work collaboratively with Mechanical Engineers, Project Engineers, Manufacturing, Logistics, Mechanical, Quality, Test and other technical disciplines as part of a combined integrated team.
  • Collaboration with PCB manufacturers and assembly houses to create manufacturable and testable PCBs.
  • Detailed design of DC-DC power supplies.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain and Supplier Quality and interact with third party suppliers of materials.
  • Select and specify electronic and electrical components based on function, cost, availability, reliability, etc. for the use in the products manufactured.
  • Designing unique and innovative systems that can withstand abusive environments for extensive time periods.

The ideal candidate for the position of Electrical Design Engineer:

  • Senior level engineering understanding of electrical schematic design, circuit simulations and multi-layer PCB layouts
  • Ability to understand current designs to support continual improvement activities
  • Experience with low noise, small signal manipulation.
  • Understanding microcontroller firmware
  • Provide written technical specifications in a clear and unambiguous fashion
  • Experience with statistical tolerance analysis
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the capability of producing innovative electrical and system solutions
  • Proficient in Design for Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, and Usability methodologies
  • Demonstrated knowledge designing robust mechanical systems to meet or exceed large temperature fluctuations, vibration and drop tests, EMI/ESD and regulatory testing requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the company professionally (internal and external Contacts)

The ideal candidate for the position of Electrical Design Engineer:

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and teamwork affinity - willing to mentor junior engineers on the team.
  • Strong communicator who is able to work effectively with peers and management alike.
  • HND in Electical Engineering or similar
  • 5 years of experience with electrical design and system applications
  • Experience designing and developing embedded electronic systems for commercial, Industrial, and/or military products
  • Experience designing electronics to comply with FCC / IC, UL, CSA, ATEX and IECEx
  • Design experience in the following areas: Analog, RF and digital circuit design, battery powered embedded systems, high reliability/robust environments

Highly Desirable Qualifications of the Electrical Design Engineer:

  • Demonstrated success using lean techniques, DFSS, Kaizen, CTQs, PLM, balanced scorecards, DFMEA
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, experience with design simulation and analysis tools
  • DFSS green belt or LEAN certification
  • Expereince with ATEX and C++

This is an extensive and varied contract position that comes with the potential opportunity to become a permanent post moving forward. Those interested must be able to commute daily to the Skemersdale area and be able to commit to full time working hours (37hrs)
